LAND ART MUSEUM HESTØYA
The Land Art Museum - Hestøya is an innovative project and Artist in Residence-program that extends a global invitation to land artists. The main goal with the project is for land artists to create unique works of land art on Hestøya, an island situated within Lund municipality of Namsos, Mid-Norway. These artists will play a crucial role in enhancing an art collection that seamlessly blends with the island's landscape. The ultimate aim is to transform Hestøya into an internationally recognised open-air museum dedicated entirely to the genre of land art.
Simultaneously, alongside the artistic projects on the island, a comprehensive digital archive will be established. This archive will house a curated collection of videos and photographs that document the diverse art installations and projects occurring on the island. As the project progresses, there are plans to inaugurate a Center for Land Art on the mainland, in close proximity to the island. This center will serve as an exhibition space for these artworks, an educational hub, and a physical archive.
MISSION STATEMENT
LAND ART MUSEUM HESTØYA is dedicated to establishing an international open-air museum exclusively devoted to land art on Hestøya, located within the Lund municipality of Namsos, Norway. In conjunction with the island's artistic expressions, there are plans to establish a land art center on the mainland in Lund. The center will function as both an exhibition space and an educational hub, while also serving as a tangible archive for photographs and films that document the art and the processes involved in creating the land art works on the island.
WHY CURATE EVERYTHING ON AN ISLAND?
Currently, land art remains largely inaccessible to the general public due to the dispersed nature of its installations in remote locations. By creating a permanent exhibition of land art on Hestøya, the museum and the art form aim to attract a broader audience, affording them the opportunity to experience and appreciate this unique genre. The project seeks to elevate land art as a medium and nature as a potent platform for artistic expression.
AN INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM
Through Land Art Museum, Hestøya, we aspire to unite the passions of art, nature, and environmental conservation while making land art accessible to a wider audience. The project will emphasize the interconnectedness of peaple, art, and nature, with the overarching goal of exploring how art can inspire us to preserve and safeguard our natural heritage.
